Ed Ramos Seminar

"The best seminar I have been to" was one of several compliments heard following the BJJ clinic with Eddie Ramos. Thanks to all who made it out to train togeth-er! Royce Alger with world class wrestling last month, Eddie Ramos with world class BJJ this month; who wants a Thai Boxing seminar next?!!!!"

Instructor Highlight: Ana Alvarez

What is your martial arts teaching history and where do you currently teach?
I started teaching back in 2012 right after I competed in a few BJJ tournaments. My passion for jiu-jitsu was growing and I wanted to find more ways to get involved. I currently teach Kids BJJ at our Westheimer location and assist in a few of our other classes there too.

What is your current rank in martial arts?
I am currently a two-striped blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

What caused you to start practicing martial arts?

I used to run track and play soccer and favored my right knee a lot, eventually I killed off the cartilage in my right knee and couldn't do anything that was a high impact plyometric workout. My aunt sug-gested I try boxing because it helped her train her body differently after a back injury and figured it might have the same effect on me. I googled "boxing gyms" and found Elite. Everything else is history!

What is your educational background?
I'm currently working my way through college to earn a bachelor's degree in International Business. I have about two years worth of school left. Working my way through school has definitely given me a new appreci-ation to the value of an education and has given me valuable experience not only in the workforce, but life experiences that eventually brought me to find my passion in martial arts.

Do you have a competitive history in martial arts?
I have competed as a white belt in a few tournaments and won a few, medaled in others. I eventually want to take my competitive training to the next level and compete at the Pan Ams and Worlds.

What do you see is the main benefit the average individual can receive from martial arts?
What I see a lot of people don't realize when they first talk about taking martial arts is how much more they get from it than just fitness and self defense. By taking the commitment to yourself to grow in martial arts an average individual gains priceless benefits like self confidence, discipline, joy, excitement, passion, and a true vision of who they are. It's like how my instructors say, "how you do jiu jitsu is how you do life"

What is your favorite part about practicing martial arts?
I like the thrill of growth. I experience it when sparring (or roll-ing in BJJ), when learning a new technique that fits snugly in my skillset, when I get pushed by my training partners, when I'm exhausted after class. It's always happening and it's a con-stant reminder of how life is so much more than what's on TV tonight. The feeling leaves me exhilarated and is addicting.

Where do you hope martial arts will take you later in your life?
I hope to create a career out of combining my passion for martial arts and my love of business and education and be-come an example for people to see that it is possible to create a life you love and be successful in all areas of life.

Greenway Student Testimonial: Robert May

What is your name and age?

When did you join Elite MMA?
Jan. 2013

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
I wanted more than just a weight room at a gym. I wanted to take kickboxing since high school. I had been busy with work.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
When I was seven I was living in Potomac, MD with family. I was outside of the apart-ment complex we were living in playing basketball in the parking lot. I was distracted for a minute and kneed a parked car. I was taken to the hospital in Washington via life flight were I was unconscious for a week. From the accident I was partially paralyzed on my right side. I wasn't sure because of the accident I could do martial arts and I wasn't sure if my doctor would clear me to take martial arts to gain mobility. I thought I could only do yoga.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
Currently training with Eric Williams to get into KKB, I had wanted to train in MMA in high school, though they did not offer martial arts as physical education.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?
The location and the schedule

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
I have been able to gain some mobility in my arm. I have seen an improvement in both my balance and coordination. When I first started I could only run up and down a flight of stairs 3-4 times. Now I can do 22 times. My confidence as also improved. I stopped smoking after a year and half of smoking. I started smoking because of school and work conflicts. It also helped reduce my stress.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get involved with martial arts or look-ing to change their current lifestyle?
For myself, I'd been a smoker due to stress from the field of work I'm in and excess drinker, since I have been training with Eric and yoga training outside of Elite MMA, I have stopped smoking and cut down on drinking and have seen an improvement in my health from not gasping for air.
