Elite MMA Greenway Opens!!!
Dear Elite Family and Friends,
Just wanted to give you an update and invite all of you to come train at Elite MMA - Greenway Plaza. Spencer, Justin, Frost, and Eric have been working on implementing all the pre-registration events and facility layout. A number of people have registered for classes and we are excited to begin teaching on Monday,June 3rd. Classes will be taught by Frost, Eric, Hai, and Justin. Frost will be there Monday and Wednesdays, Eric will be there Tuesdays, Hai will be there Thursdays and Justin will be there Monday through Thursdays teaching.
Training at Greenway reminds us of training in Brazil. One of our favorite memories of training in Brazil is grabbing some Acai at the Bibi Sucos with the guys (or gals) after we trained. There is an awesome food and smoothie bar right outsidethe training room at Greenway! No Acai served yet, but maybe if enough of us ask for it they will import!

Student Highlight: Kerwin Rodriguez
What is your name and age?
My name is Kerwin Rodriguez and I am 24 years old.
When did you join Elite MMA?
I joined Elite MMA in January of 2012.
Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
I decided to take martial arts to lose weight and help better my lifestyle.
In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
I had a phobia of being seen wearing a gi by people I knew.
Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
This my first time taking martial arts and I participate in a little Kickboxing but train in BJJ at Elite in Baytown.
If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?
At first when i walked into elite i was kind of hesitant to join Elite because I did not want to be seen in a gi and be made fun of like the people that do karate. Then one of the guys that was training that day told me that joining into the program would change my life, or at least it did for him, and that really moved me and every since then I have been all in.
Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
Since I have joined Elite I have been able to conquer my fear of being seen in a gi, I will practically sleep in mine now. I have also lost over 20lbs. I have gained a ton of self confidence and the whole experience has really change my life in more ways then I could have ever imagined athletically and in my personal life.
Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get in-volved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?

What is your martial arts teaching history and where do you currently teach?
I trained martial arts as a kid learning Kung Fu and Kenpo. During college I studied Muay Thai and Chinese San Shou. Then in 2003 I found Elite MMA and been training BJJ since. I have been teaching Martial Arts for Elite since 2007 when I started to volunteer to teach the KKB classes. Now I teach Kardio Kickboxing, Fundamen-tals of Kickboxing, Fight Fit, and Fundamentals of BJJ. I also do personal training for weight loss, competition, or martial arts.
What is your current rank in martial arts?
Currently I am a 2 Stripe Brown Belt in BJJ under Eric Williams and Hai Nguyen of Elite MMA.
Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
I started because I wanted to compete. I was always interested in martial arts as a kid. I started at 13 practicing Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Chinese Kenpo. I was a huge Bruce Lee fan and I wanted to be like him.
What is your educational background?
I studied Biology at UH with a minor in chemistry. I am actually a few credits short of receiving my Bachelors.
Do you have a competitive history in martial arts?
I fought in several tournaments in kickboxing and San Shou. I competed in Brazil and all over the US in BJJ tournaments. I also have a 1-0 record in MMA as an amateur.
What do you see is the main benefit the av-erage individual can receive from martial arts?
I think the main benefit is overcoming obstacles. All throughout our lives we face many obstacles whether its physical or mental. Practicing martial arts you can learn to overcome any obstacle no matter what the circumstance is.
What is your favorite part about practicing martial arts?
My favorite part of training is at the end of the day we all are here supporting each other. The best is after a good training session everyone sits around and talk about their lives and how awesome training at Elite MMA is.
Where do you hope martial arts will take you later in your life?
I look forward to be part of a huge expansion of Elite MMA nationally and internationally. I see that Elite MMA will be a worldwide organization to improve lives and a healthy culture.

Why Fast Food is bad for you!
Lack of Nutrients
Fast food is notoriously devoid of fruits and vegetables. A sandwich might have a slice of tomato or a few leaves of lettuce, but that's usually where it ends. Even salads available at fast-food places aren't much better. A fast-food restaurant will typically offer a small, basic garden salad that includes just lettuce, carrots and to-mato with your choice of dressing, as well as a larger version of the same salad that simply includes cheese and either grilled and or fried chicken. If you regularly eat at fast food places, you'll be missing on important nutrients, such as fiber and vitamins A and C, found mostly in fruits and vegetables.
During a 2006 study, researchers from the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center discovered that a diet high in trans fat causes more weight gain than a diet high in healthy, unsaturated fats. This is true even if both diets contain the same amount of calories. Trans fats are the most common fats found in fast foods, especially fried foods.
Probably the most obvious risk of eating fast food is weight gain. Fast food is not necessarily the cause of the obesity problem in America, but it can certainly contribute to it. Fast food is high in fat, calories and sugars. Coupled with a sedentary lifestyle and the fact that portions are getting larger and larger, it's no surprise that eating fast food can lead to weight gain. In theory, you could eat fast food and lose weight, if you choose small portions and avoid fried foods and high-calorie sauces and extras. However, if you choose the larger portions and eat indiscriminately, the risk of obesity does go up.
Occasionally consuming fast food in moderate amounts should not be detrimental to your health -- especially if you make smart choices. Some fast food restaurants offer a few healthy choices if you're willing to dig into their menus. At burger chains, you can choose a baked potato over fries to save on fat and calories. You can also choose a yogurt parfait or egg on a muffin as a breakfast option. They're not necessarily nutritious options, but they're healthier than other foods offered on the menu.

Technique: Push/Pull Sweep with Jordan Rivas
1. My partner stands up in my open guard. Maintain a cross collar grip to control my partner's posture.
2. With your free hand grab the same side ankles collar grip. Use your foot behind your partner's knee.
3. Push your partners hip with your foot while pulling his ankle.
4. Continue pushing with the foot on the hip will pulling on the ankle grip.
5. Stand up to complete the sweep.
