Greenway Student Highlight—Andy Paradise

What is your name and age?
Andy Paradise, 41 years old.

When did you join Elite MMA?
I joined elite in May of 2013..

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
There are several reasons why I began taking martial arts. After a di-vorce, I needed something constructive to do with my additional free time. I used to be a distance runner; but a couple surgeries and my growing intolerance for running in the Houston heat led to my search for an alternate. Martial arts keeps me indoors, isn't all that stressful on my knees, and my friends that take it seem to enjoy it.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
In the past, my biggest limitation to taking martial arts was my work. For the first ten years of my career, I traveled Monday thru Fri-day every week. Consequently, the best option for me was to run.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
Yes. I take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?
I was mildly concerned about my ankle and knee surgeries. I suspected martial arts would been much kinder than running, and this has proven true. Another concern was being able to maintain a consistent class schedule while managing an occasionally demanding work and family schedule.

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
It has indeed occupied the void left in the wake of the divorce. In the Spring, I discovered an unexpected accomplishment when I went for a rare run around Memorial Park. I probably had-n't been for a run in over 6 months and I was able to do a loop around the park in 20 minutes.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get involved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?
Something I am guilty of and I suspect there are many others is the perception of obstacles to starting a new challenge and/or changing your lifestyle.
