5 Powerful Ways to Make Your Own Luck Every Day

By Peter Economy

For years, my favorite quotation has been something computer scientist Alan Kay once said, "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." In other words, you create your own luck--and your own future.

Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. If you're prepared for an opportunity when it arrives on your doorstep, and you're willing to take it, then success will be yours.

Here are five powerful ways to make your own luck--and to invent your own future.

1. Tap into your optimism

Optimistic people naturally create lots of good luck. Studies have proven that more than 80 percent of people who feel they're lucky actually work harder at creating their good luck. On the flip side, people who feel unlucky tend to believe that bad luck just happens (to them, a lot) and that it isn't something they have any power to change. Lucky people view the world with optimism. When bad things happen--and they do-- it is their optimism that makes them extremely resilient. They are able to pick themselves up and face another day--creating more good luck. So tap into your optimism and begin creating your own good luck.

2. Be open to the possibilities

Get to know as many people as you possibly can and build an extensive network of contacts. Constantly be on the watch for potential opportunities, and work hard to make them happen. Be open to the possibilities--even if it means embracing a different way of thinking about something, or a big life or career change.

3. Listen to your inner voice

A lot of times, people don't listen to their inner voice--their intuition--and then soon regret it. How many times have you said to yourself, "If only I had listened to myself?" The next time you have to make an important decision about the future, first clear your mind--even deep breathing works. By calming your thoughts, you will be able to hear your inner voice that much louder and act upon it.

4. Shoot for the moon

You've heard the saying, "Shoot for the moon and you might just catch some stars on the way down." It's true! You can create your own luck by setting goals that you're not sure you can achieve, and then going for it and working hard to make them real. By working hard towards your biggest dreams, new opportunities can and will be realized--including some you may never have considered. Seizing these opportunities and making the most of them is how we make our own luck.

5. There is no finish line

In order to continue to create your own luck, you need to remind yourself that there is never a finish line. Never stop learning and growing. Reminding yourself that there will never be a finish line and continuing to learn and grow and remain optimistic will bring you the best luck of all--happiness and contentment with your life and who you are.

Baytown Student Highlight— Blake Coburn

What is your name and age?

My name is Blake Coburn and I am 35 years old.

When did you join Elite MMA?

I joined Elite MMA in September of 2013.

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?

We originally enrolled my son Brayden in the kids jiu jitsu class to build structure, discipline and maintain and active lifestyle. After spending 6 months watching my son develop, I became very interested in the arts. I also thought it would benefit me in the same form it did my son; structure, discipline and exercise.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?

I have always been involved in sports and have a very competitive personality. I was concerned that starting martial arts later in life would put me behind. I have a hard time dealing with failure, and putting myself in an uncertain challenging environment was difficult. I was also concerned that I would get injured and it would impact my ability to make a living. One of my instructors told me that more people get injured playing softball or basketball than training at Elite. The next week, I broke my ankle playing basketball and decided he was right. Since I have started training, I haven’t sustained any substantial injuries and haven’t missed a day of work because of it.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?

Yes, this is the first time that I have taken martial arts. I am currently active in the kickboxing class and I am a 4 stripe white belt in jiu jitsu.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?

The family atmosphere at Elite is a big reason that I train and stay active. To be able to walk into the gym and be welcomed by the staff, as well as other members, is a great feeling. The instructor’s willingness to go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and understand your technique is also a big reason.

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?

Since I have joined Elite, I have competed, and placed third, in an IBJJF tournament.  That gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. At 35 years old, I am in best physical shape of my life. I also believe that it has helped with my confidence and overall ability to succeed as an individual. I have had multiple promotions at work and speak in front of large groups of people. I can accredit some of my personal growth to my time training and focus that it brings.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get involved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?

I understand that starting a new chapter in your life can be difficult and change is always hard. But, the confidence you can obtain, and the support from the Elite family, is a step above anywhere else. Nothing feels better than having a stressful day at work, walking into the gym and being welcomed by such an amazing group of people.   To top it off, you’re able to beat the stuffing out of a heavy bag. You should definitely try it…. It’s addicting!!!

Westheimer Student Highlight— Ryan McMillan

What is your name and age?

My name is Ryan McMillian. I'm 36 years old.

When did you join Elite MMA?

I joined Elite MMA in January 12 2012.

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?

I started taking martial arts because I wanted a new hobby and wanted a great way to get in better shape. I have always been interested in grappling and MMA.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?

I never tried it before because I just didn't really know where to go and wasn't sure if I was too old to get started.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?

I had taken karate and tae kwon do as a kid but never really did it at a high level. Now I train boxing, gi, nogi Jiu Jitsu, and MMA classes.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?

The only concerns I had about going to Elite was that I thought maybe I was too old or that there would just be a bunch of meat heads in there. I could have never been so wrong. Everyone has been so helpful and generous with there knowledge. I have made so many amazing friends at Elite.

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?

Since joining Elite I have gotten myself in the best shape in my life. I have competed and medaled in several Jiu Jitsu tournaments. The best thing that I have accomplished though is my lifelong friends and all the self confidence in the world.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get involved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?

Anyone looking to change their lifestyle or interested in getting involved in MMA should definitely give it a shot. It is so empowering and gratifying. It has been the best decision I have ever made.
