Resolution Check-In

You've now had time to work on your New Year's resolutions, but what about your follow-up and follow-through? Have you taken the time to review what you expected? A simple follow-up is often not as simple as it seems. When setting goals, it is also important to follow up and check on how you are pro-gressing, with a "Resolution Check-In." The "Check-In" will reveal how you're doing. If you haven't al-ready set goals for this year, then you can use this Kickin' article to motivate you to set them.

Formal goal-setters seem to beat the competition, in regards to achieving their objectives. The reason is simple: they set goals and check their lists, regularly. This activity reminds them to stay on track, re-evaluate or re-establish a goal, when necessary. Achieving your goals after you've set them is simply a matter of follow-up and follow-through. If you set a goal and forget about it, then it will most likely nev-er be completed; but if you monitor your progress and take steps daily toward achieving that goal, then you are well on your way to unlimited power and success.

Here are three steps for your Resolutions Check-In. Maybe it is time to reassess your goal setting. Be realistic and work toward achieving your goals daily.

Make sure you are always checking, readjusting and pushing forward to achieve your goals. People who succeed continually monitor their progress.

1. Look closely at your goals to determine which goals are appropriate and inappropriate.
2. Do not abandon your goals; reevaluate them. A goal should be challenging, yet attainable.
3. Look at your goals and apply a check and balance timeline. You should have a timeline for every one of your goals. For example, you want to lose 100 pounds. Determine a healthy, weekly weight loss tar-get and monitor your loss. Also, if you are not losing weight, then determine why. Weekly, bi-weekly and monthly sub-goals are realistic. If you learn to succeed weekly, then you will see great results monthly.

What is your martial arts teaching history and where do you currently teach?
I've been teaching martial arts a little over 2 years now. I started out assisting the kids jiu jitsu class and moved up to teaching other classes like cardio kickboxing, adult jiu jitsu etc. I am currently teaching at the Westheimer and Greenway locations.

What is your current rank in martial arts?
I am currently a one stripe purple belt in BJJ.

What caused you to start practicing martial arts?
I have always had an interest as a child and ever since I tried my first class in 2010 I have been hooked.

What is your educational background?
I am currently a sophomore at Houston community college. Then I will be looking to transfer at the University of Houston where I will be finishing with a bachelor's degree in ac-counting.

Do you have a competitive history in martial arts?
Yes, I started competing three months into my training. Main-ly jiu jitsu tournaments, I've won many local and international tournaments. My most recent accomplishment was taking a gold medal in the Abu Dahbi Jiu Jitsu Trials and the Houston International Open.

What do you see is the main benefit the average individual can receive from martial arts?
The main benefit I see that the average individual will receive is a world-class support system. You are not just someone that comes in and out, you are a part of our community. We makes sure we are there for you and to help you in the goals you want to accomplish.

What is your favorite part about practicing martial arts?
My favorite part about practicing martial arts is that the art is not in one dimension, it is more than that. Its not just physical, it is mental and it involves other areas of your life. Martial arts helps you sharpen yourself in all areas of life, making you a more well-rounded individual.

Where do you hope martial arts will take you later in your life?
I see myself sharing what have been given to me. Really showing people how martial arts really can do positive things in your life.

What is your name and age?
Amber Menzie - 34

When did you join Elite MMA?
July of 2014

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
A friend introduced me to kickboxing, and I thought it would be a fun way to get in shape. I get bored easily, but the kickboxing was something different.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
I didn't really know much about martial arts. I had watched a few UFC matches but didn't know how great of a workout it was.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
Yes. I mainly take Cardio Kickboxing, Fight Fit (when I can), and Kickboxing fundamentals. I have tried Jiu Jitsu as well, and think it is fun too.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?
I was a little nervous at first not knowing anyone, and a little intimidated by a martial arts gym. However, EVERYONE was so welcoming and friendly, that any nervousness faded away in about 5 minutes. I also like how there are a variety of classes to take and that they are offered either early in the morning or later in the evening.

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
I have lost close to 22lbs and 3 dress sizes. I am so much more confident not only in my appearance, but myself. I feel so much stronger and healthier. I sleep better and have a ton of energy all the time.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get in-volved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?
What I love most about my entire experience at Elite MMA are the people. It's so nice to be able to workout and not be judged. I love how everyone encourages each other. As far as martial arts goes, I feel like it's a total body workout. Not only do you get every part of your body in shape, but you also exercise your mind. It's so much fun. This is the first time in a long time that I am actually looking forward to summer thanks to Elite!

I joined a little over a year ago.

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
I grew up playing basketball so I’m used to competitive sports. Since I has stopped playing competitively, I was craving a new competitive and exciting activity.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
I never not wanted to participate in martial arts. I suppose I just never had an opportunity to do so. When the Kingwood location opened up, everything just seemed to fall in place and I joined.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
I participate in the kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu class. I am definitely a newbie to Jiu Jitsu!

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?
I never had any reservations about joining. I ultimately made the decision to join for the physical and competitive challenge. I love the family atmosphere and all the Elite coaches! My coaches have taken the time to make sure that I feel prepared and ready for each tournament by: rolling extra with me, drilling, and answering all of my questions.

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
Since joining Elite my love for Jiu Jitsu has grown 100 fold! I have really embraced the Jiu Jitsu life style. I have participated in 5 tournaments, placing 1st. And competed in an ‘in house’ tournament with men, placing third. I was incredibly proud of myself that I could hang with the boys! I have also lost 20 lbs since joining. I think I am in the best shape I have ever been in my life. Jiu Jitsu makes me motivated and holds me accountable to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get involved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?
Kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu can help you kick start your way into a healthy lifestyle. Don’t be intimidated to try something new!
