WESTHEIMER INSTRUCTOR HIGHLIGHT - PAT SWAN

What is your martial arts teaching history and where do you currently teach?
I've been teaching boxing lessons since 1995. I currently teach Boxing to kids and adults in clas-ses and private lessons at ELITE MMA and help train MMA fighters.

What is your current rank in martial arts?
I'm a retired professional boxer and was world ranked in the super middleweight division.

What caused you to start practicing martial arts?
I love competition, especially one on one.

What is your educational background?
I have a BA in Physical Education and currently teach in Katy.

Do you have a competitive history in martial arts?
I was the Houston Golden Gloves Champion in 1991 and was world ranked in profes-sional boxing.

What do you see is the main benefit the average individual can receive from martial arts?
It's great exercise and gives you real tools to defend yourself.

What is your favorite part about practicing martial arts?
Teaching someone a boxing skill and seeing the light go on when they finally grasp and start to master the technique.

Where do you hope martial arts will take you later in your life?
I enjoy working out and teaching others the things I've learned as boxer. I hope to be teaching boxing and helping others for many years to come.

 

BAYTOWN STUDENT HIGHLIGHT - MARISOL YAMASHITA

What is your name and age?
My name is Marisol Yamashita and I am 36 years old.

When did you join Elite MMA?
I joined Elite MMA about 7 years ago.

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
I decided to start taking martial arts because my boys were already in the adult Brazilian jiu-jitsu program and their instructors were very persuasive and persis-tent. Rather than sitting on the bench on the sideline they persuaded me since I was there to try out the cardio kickboxing program. So that's exactly what I did!

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
The reason why I never started martial arts before was because it seemed too intimidating for me. Watching the students during both classes do their thing...I absolutely thought "there's no way I could do that".
Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
This was my first time taking martial arts. I started with cardio kickboxing and after a year I joined the women's BJJ class and then I finally gathered the courage to join the adult class.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your decision?
The concern I had with Elite MMA was basically "Am I going to be able to keep up with the guys?" I didn't want to look stupid or embarrass myself in front of everyone which made me even more self conscious. I wasn't sure how comfortable I was going to be rolling around with guys...being a women and I certainly didn't want to disappoint my instructors. I wanted to prove to them that I can roll with the big dogs! My first adult BJJ class changed that for me. Everyone made me feel right at home and took care of me. All were very respectful and encouraging...I consider them my biggest supporters now!


Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
Since joining Elite MMA I am now a 4 stripe blue belt. I reached out of my comfort zone and competed a few times...something I thought I would never do. For a woman it's just an amazing feeling knowing that you can protect yourself if a certain situations occur. My body has never been pushed to its limits cardio and strength wise and growing as a practitioner alongside with my kids and husband has been the greatest blessing!

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get in-volved with martial arts or looking to change their current lifestyle?
I always get asked if I lift weights and where do I work out. Then I tell them "Elite MMA" and explain to them what I do and what classes Elite offers. I pro-ceed to tell then if you want something fun, challenging, and different then this is perfect for you but most of all...we're a family! Between my awesome instructors and teammates, they are always there pushing me to meet my goals on and off the mats. Elite MMA really does become a lifestyle!

What is your name and age?
Katey, 24 years old.

When did you join Elite MMA?
February 2014

Why did you decide to start taking martial arts?
I wanted to gain strength and flexibility. I heard kick-boxing was a great way to get stronger.

In the past what had caused you not to take martial arts?
My schedule has always been inconsistent.

Is this your first time taking martial arts and what classes do you take?
Yes, this is my first time taking martial arts and I take kickboxing.

If you had any concerns about joining Elite MMA, what helped you with your deci-sion?
The staff is very friendly and encouraging. They want to help you reach your goals.

Since you have been part of Elite, please share what you have been able to accomplish?
My arms and legs are much stronger than when I started. My body feels better and healthier.

Anything else you want to share with someone who is looking to get involved with martial arts or look-ing to change their current lifestyle?
Kickboxing is a fun and exhilarating way to get exer-cise. Everyone in class is supportive and encouraging.
